Laminate Flooring Installation

The budget-conscious choice that does not look like one. Modern laminate is scratch-resistant, dimensionally stable, and convincing underfoot.

Laminate earned a bad reputation twenty years ago and has not deserved it for a decade. The wear layers are genuinely tough — often tougher than hardwood against scratching — and the embossed textures line up with the grain pattern rather than repeating every fourth board.

It is a floating floor, which means it goes down fast and can be installed over most existing hard surfaces.

Know its one weakness

Laminate has a fiberboard core. Standing water that gets into a seam will swell it, and a swollen board does not go back. Water-resistant products help, but for bathrooms and laundry rooms we will point you to vinyl plank instead.

Underlayment matters

The right underlayment quiets the hollow click that gives cheap laminate away, adds a little cushion, and handles vapor over concrete. Some laminate comes with it attached; a lot of what is sold does not.

Expansion gaps

A floating floor has to be able to move. Boards butted tight to the wall will buckle in humid weather. The gap gets hidden under baseboard or quarter round — not caulked shut.

Flat subfloor, quiet floor

Any dip bigger than about 3/16 inch over 10 feet turns into a soft, clicking spot. We flatten first.

Common questions

Laminate — straight answers.

Is laminate cheaper than vinyl plank?

Often, but the gap has narrowed a lot. Once you factor in underlayment and the fact that LVP is fully waterproof, the value comparison is closer than it looks on a price tag. We will price both if you want to compare.

Can it go over concrete?

Yes, with a vapor barrier. Concrete releases moisture for years, and without a barrier that moisture ends up in the core of your floor.

Will it be noisy?

Not with proper underlayment over a flat subfloor. The hollow sound people associate with laminate almost always traces back to one of those two things being skipped.

Is the installation warrantied?

Yes. Every installation we do carries a one-year workmanship warranty. If something we installed fails because of how it was installed, we come back and fix it. Manufacturer defects are covered separately by the product warranty, and we will help you file that claim.

“He is an honest flooring contractor and works hard to get the job done, no matter the request. He travels too — jobs spanning from the Poconos to the shore. The most competitive pricing in the Philadelphia area.”

“Mike has done several rooms in our home and each one was a stellar job. Highly recommend As Good As It Gets. Mike will be doing our plank floor in our sunroom this fall.”
